Snow globes are common Christmas decorations and are often given as gifts. Of course, the "snow" inside the globes are not the frozen water crystals we are familiar with. Instead, organic chemical compounds like benzoic acid are crystallised to form white, snow-like crystals. These flaky solids are capable of retaining their solid form at a wider range of temperatures, and do not dissolve in cool water, allowing them to float and slowly sink like snowflakes.
