Tinsel fibres are typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is formed by adding thousands of molecules of vinyl chloride together in a long chain. While the starting material is a toxic gas, PVC itself is a rigid, chemically inert polymer. Plasticisers such as di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) are added to gives tinsel its flexibility.
